“My husband was killed in action defending the motherland. I want revenge on the fascist dogs for his death and for the death of Soviet people tortured by the fascist barbarians. For this purpose, I’ve deposited all my personal savings—50,000 rubles—to the National Bank in order to build a tank. I kindly ask to name the tank ‘Fighting Girlfriend’ and to send me to the frontline as a driver of said tank.”
- Letter from Mariya Oktyabrskaya to Joseph Stalin
Not only was Oktyabrskaya successful in her request to join Stalin's army, she became a highly skilled tank driver and mechanic, which quickly earned the esteem and respect of fellow soldiers. On multiple occasions, she was reported to have leapt out of her tank to make a repair to her tank or to another tank while under fire. She also routinely displayed courage and resilience, often going where other tank drivers hesitated to go.
She was a woman of beauty, skill, and incredible courage in the face of the worst kind of global tyranny. When we heard her story, we knew we had to make a pen we hoped would capture some small part of her incredible story. Crafted from Cosmic Red acrylic and finished with antique pewter hardware designed to recreate the look of an army tank, the "Fighting Girlfriend" is a literal homage to Oktyabrskaya's weapon of choice.
She is a a tribute to women who served in surprising ways to combat the spread of fascism across Europe during WWII.
